Galaxy Drips + 20% Off Nail Art Brushes!

A new week, a new manicure!

After months of having "drip nails" on my to-do list, I finally gave them a shot. I hadn't done galaxy nails in this style before, so after googling some inspiration I decided to put my own take on it. And wow - they were more challenging than I imagined! I sponged part of it and painted on the rest, trying to keep within the confines of the drips. As you can see, this worked out on some areas better than others... plus I changed up the final look quite a few times before settling on this one. So, painting it on was a bit of a mission and quite time-consuming, as I did both hands.

That wasn't the most frustrating part, though...

As a bit of background, I've been having trouble for the last year with my nail polish cracking (not just chipping) within 24 hours of application. This takes a fair bit of the fun out of nail art, as my nails simply don't last. So far I've found two brands that last longer (Sally Hansen Color Therapy and Picture Polish), but I've put the problem down to, well, an occupational hazard.

I'm a bit late to the party, but on Facebook a while ago there were a tonne of sparkly nails going around. Not just a little glittery - but magical, glimmering beams of joy coming from the tips of people's fingers. Everyone was amazed - even when they found out that 90% of the sparkle came from using an app. I've downloaded said app (it's called kirakira+) and at the end of this post have a video showing what it does.

Sparkle nails (sans app).

The point of these nails was to create the most sparkly, over-the-top nails possible, so I could use the app to it's full advantage. I feel like I ticked that box pretty well! I liked them for about 45 seconds, and then spent the next week or two regretting that I did them in gel polish. Fun, yes, but a tad tacky.

Crayon Nail Art | Inspired by Crayola

I've been tagged in so many Crayon/Crayola nails lately! This design links two key parts of my life - nail art and teaching, so many of my friends have noticed that and shared them with me. Of course, I had to try them for myself.

They are by no means my original design - I'm not sure who created them first. When I do a search thousands of designs come up - so if anyone knows who initially did these please let me know so I can credit them!

As you will know if you read this post on Facebook, I'm no longer making weekly YouTube tutorials, and instead will be alternating between picture tutorials, mini video tutorials and just the nails themselves. I haven't made a picture tutorial for years before this one, and quite enjoyed it! The problem I've had in the past is that people will come along and crop out all of my watermarking and claim it as their own. I'm now using a Nailed It NZ mat, which hopefully will help prevent against this in the future - although I need to re-position my nail to a part where the text is smaller next time!

These are really quite a simple design, but bear in mind the squiggle is harder than it looks. Doing all ten nails is quite time-consuming, so make sure you set aside at least an hour, and use a good, thin nail art brush.

Dragon Egg Nails - Game Of Thrones Inspired! | Born Pretty Store Review

Today's something of an important day, for me. For years this blog has been rejected for months at a time, with only the occasional post to promote something major. However, I've made some big decisions about the future of Nailed It NZ lately, and the end result is that from now on there will be a lot more blogging and a lot less YouTubing. I could write a book on all the reasons why, but the main ones are outlined in this Facebook post.

I'm quite excited. I'm far more eloquent in writing than speech (it's hard to act natural on camera when you've messed a line 34728947294 times!) and this just feels right. I'm going back to my roots, before the high workload/low reward of YouTube destroys my passion for nail art. The plan at the moment is to be much more active on Facebook and Instagram, and update this blog once a week. Of course, my shop will continue as usual, selling nail art brushes and nail files.

So! Here we are! This post is a review of some Born Pretty Store goodies. I've used their products for many years now, and they were the first company to ever contact me. Cheap and with a wide variety, they're great - as long as you're prepared for a bit of a wait for their (free) shipping.

I've created some Dragon Egg Nails using two of the products they sent me. I had quite an exciting goodie bag and was sorting through and testing it out when I discovered these iridescent flakies. They're actually SO amazing. You can check them out on their site here.

As you can see, it creates the most amazing colour-changing nail, with huge amount of depth. The second I saw how it looked I was blown away, and after raving about it to hubby I decided to create Dragon Eggs out of it. I had just caught up in Game of Thrones (SO GOOD!), so it was pretty good timing.

An Exciting Little Update!

Back in January I announced I had opened a little nail art store online, selling nail art brushes. It was all very exciting! Since then hundreds of people from around the world have purchased my brushes, and because of this I've been able to expand my store. So firstly, THANK YOU! I couldn't have done this without you guys.

So, today's announcement is... Nailed It NZ now sells nail files ☺.

These files are awesome, if I do say so myself. I used to hate nail files when I was younger; they were bendy, tiny, hard to hold, and they always felt so rough. As I did my nail tech training I explored many of the nail files the world had to offer, and developed a strong preference for diamond-shaped files. What I love most about these is how comfortable they are to hold. They sit so nicely in your hand and before long they feel like they've become an extension of yourself. With the diamond-shape, it means there are eight edges you can file with - and of course, I made sure the grit was just right!

Nailed It NZ has a Patreon!

Hey guys - just a quick update to let you know that Nailed It NZ is now on Patreon!
Patreon is a popular way for people to show their support for their favourite creators. Patrons pay a chosen amount - for me it's per month, to help the creator continue what they're doing... and make it better. Some well-known users of Patreon are Hank and John Green, Amanda Palmer , Blind Wave & Wait But Why. You can learn more about Patreon and how it works here and here.
A lot of work goes into creating online content, and after getting a bit of interest in my own Patreon lately, I thought I'd share it publicly.

If you enjoy my videos and find that you get real value out of them, I'd love it you showed your support by throwing a couple of dollars my way each month. This money will help to pay for new camera equipment, upskilling classes, computer parts and will generally help with replacing things that wear or run out. Investing in these things mean that the quality of my videos will continue to increase, and you'll have a part to play in the direction Nailed It NZ grows in.

In case you're wondering - here's what Patreon isn't; a way to pay for my bills, rent and groceries. Not that there's anything wrong with creators doing this - everyone's got to eat, right? But I have a great job, and that has me covered for the day-to-day stuff. This is just to help build a better support and tutorial channel for you guys, without dipping into my grocery money too much ☺.
Check out the reward tiers on Patreon (yes, there are rewards! Discounts! Woo!), and if you have any questions, feel free to comment them here, on Facebook or email me at
I'm an open book ☺.

Hey guys - I just realised it's the last few days of my five year celebrations and I haven't mentioned it on the blog! I've been talking about it a lot over on YouTube and Facebook; May marks five years since I started Nailed It NZ. Right here on this platform, too ☺. Crazy to see how far it's come since then - and there's more on the way, I promise!

I won't waffle on - but in case you've been thinking about buying my nail art brush line, I currently have a really good sale on. 20% off all stock, no minimum order - just pop in the code BIRTHDAYSALE at checkout to get your discount. Also, if you order with a friend you can get free shipping - all orders over $40 get free shipping worldwide.

The sale ends tomorrow though, so if you're wanting some head over to now and I'll send them out to you ASAP.

I ship internationally and you can read a bit more about Nailed It NZ here, and see our FAQ's here.

Now, on to the nail art!

As part of the birthday celebrations I recreated three of my oldest designs and made them into tutorials. All are really simple to do ☺. Here we have these little blue monsters, before and after.

Seriously, could I have at least TRIED to avoid the cuticles?

Next there's this heartstings design - a long-term favourite!

Moana, Magic & Love Nail Art, Plus Exciting Shop Update!

Hi guys - I thought it would be nice to give a little update as to what I've been up to in the last couple of months. Over on YouTube I've been releasing a new tutorial every week, as usual - and here are some of my favourites from the last little while.

These playing card nails were part of a collaboration I did with a (very clever) magician called Alfie Whattam. He's from the UK and has just moved to NZ and I was blown away by his card tricks - watch our collaboration here and here.

These Moana nails just went up last night, and I swear most of my weekend has been devoted to these - five relatively complicated nails aren't easy to edit! Good thing I love the movie, otherwise having "How Far I'll Go" in my head for 24 hours straight could be seen as a bad thing... ;).

You can watch this tutorial here.

This Valentine's 5-in-5 proved pretty popular in the weeks before the day of love, and I really enjoyed painting it - not too simple, not too complicated! I've got a new 5-in-5 coming very soon, this time with an Easter theme.

Bit of an update...

Whew - been a while!
In case you're just dropping by, I used to update several times a week on this blog, however over time I've moved over to YouTube as my main platform. However, things have been a bit exciting lately so I thought I'd do a quick update...

In November 2016, I released my very own line of nail art brushes!

This has been a dream of mine for so long - to have quality, beautiful brushes available for my followers to purchase. These brushes are the four essentials you need for nail art - there's a detail brush (already nicknamed "The Goddess" by customers for it's versatility!), a striping brush, a dotting tool and a clean up brush.

Each brush is stylishly shaped, with a black finish and silver embossing for my logo. The bristles are thin and flexible, great for all kinds of hand-painted nail art.

As a bit of a bonus, I use these brushes on my YouTube channel now, so you can now use the exact same tool I do, in the same way. No more trying to create something pretty with an old, frayed or too-thick brush! I also have tutorials on cleaning and storing them, to maximise the life of them.

This is my own little business - it's me sitting down and packing them at the end of the day, then sending them off the next morning. I love recognising long-term followers amongest customer's names, and am constantly surprised and thrilled by the new ones!

If you're a fan of my work and are interested in buying a set of these, please check out my online store. I ship internationally ☺.

Also - tag me in your Instagram photos when you receive them and show me what you get up to! I've made a dedicated IG just for the brushes - @shopnaileditnz, to complement my original IG - @naileditnz.

Hope you're having a great start to 2017 ♥.
