Glam party nails and "I love wine" nails!

I'm finally almost out of posts - the last week's worth have been semi-old ones I prepared in advance, as I'm currently on a polish hiatus. One more design to go - if I decide to even put it on here, it's pretty average! I'm going to start making some nail art tutorials this week, and more Disney nails, and a million more things. I really hope I never stop painting my nails, as there are so many more ideas I have and that I need to try! It'd be such a shame to never do them.

These nails were done on my friend's flatmate, Rachel! She wanted them to match her dress she was wearing to a party, and I think we were both quite happy with the way they turned out. I hope they stayed on for awhile! It really seems to vary - I know one girl that can keep them on for two weeks with minimal chipping, and I kept one of my favourite designs on for a week recently with none at all. I think the trick is to be really careful for the first 24-48 hours, after that they're very hard and much less likely to chip or peel. But then some designs just fall off... I can't wait to learn to do acrylics and gels! Next year, hopefully.

I'm in a polish-related dilemma, by the way, and I could really use some advice. I'm going to do whatever I want anyway (it's my new thing, haha) but I wouldn't mind getting some other people's opinions, open my eyes to the pros and cons, you know. I'll explain it at the end of this post.

Tribal Flower nails that look like starfish...

I've done so much nail art on other people lately! I did these on my friend Lucy about a week ago. She's a uni friend and normally lives in a couple of hours away, so it was really cool that she came up for a visit! I ended up quite liking these nails, even if the flowers do look a bit like starfish :P.

I used OPI's Green-wich village as the base colour, and everything else (bar the silver) was in acrylic paint.

Teaching my friend nail art! Leopard print ☺

Have you entered my giveaway?

I've been doing nail art for about a year now, and over that time many of my friends have become interested in this little hobby of mine. I love to paint their nails whenever I get the chance, but what I really want is someone else to get as into it as I am! I see Hannah from A Girl with some Clothes every week or two, but that's just for social things, not nail painting. Harriet from Nailhilism lives just 5-10 minutes walk away from me, but we still haven't had a proper nail art date! So, I'm busy trying to convert my friends that I see regularly into the wonderful religion of fancy nails.

Two of my uni friends have started doing it themselves! The following photos are of my friend Dale (whose nails have appeared quite a lot on my blog before) doing her own leopard print nails.
In case you're new to leopard print nails and want to know how to do them, here's a brief explanation:
1. Paint a base colour.
2. Make random dots with different colours.
3. Draw C's and curved lines around the dots.
I've also got a picture tutorial for leopard print nails, which you can find here. I also have heaps more nail art tutorials here!

Ginger tabby cat nails!

I painted these little cats on my friend's nails about a week ago. She has a cat just like them and we thought it'd be cool to have nails to match her furry friend!

I like doing these sorts of nails, as each one has personality. You can go through and choose your favourites - "oh, that one looks very friendly, but that one's in a bad mood!"

Disney nail art #1 - Aladdin!

My friend Anjali over at From L&P to English Tea is taking part in a Disney blog challenge next month - at first I thought it was a Disney nail art challenge and was super excited! Unfortunately (for me) it's a more general blogger's thing - "What's your favourite villian" etc. Nevertheless  it reminded me that someone had requested Disney nails awhile ago and it prompted me to do them!
Here are my Aladdin nails!

Let's face it, Disney is a pretty cool theme for nail art, so I'm planning to do heaps more Disney nail art over the next month or two now! I'll probably branch into Pixar and others too, like with these Anastasia nails I did back in December.

Floral nail art - purple flowers!

Have you entered my giveaway?

I did these flower nails about a week ago when I was on holiday - please ignore the cut on my middle finger! I had been doing a lot of gardening and the bushes attacked me :(. I can't believe my nails haven't broken yet, they've been so long for ages! And my nail polish has been staying on really well too - I've still got on the tribal diva nail art I did six days ago and there's not a chip in sight! I'll take them off tomorrow though.

I really like this design. I didn't get the shading and shadows quite right though... My excuse is I didn't do art for most of high school and never learnt how to paint shadows properly :P. I prefer to copy a picture for this sort of thing and I didn't have one with me this time - but I'm happy with it still! I'm really glad I added in the gold glitter too, it really finished the whole design.

Piano nail art

I did these piano nails a few days ago, and thought they were really cute! I've done piano nails before, here, when I had just started nail art. Those were a bit different though - they were colourful instead of the traditional black and white, and therefore didn't need the lines to separate the keys. Considering how simple this design looks, it wasn't very easy!

The problem was getting the lines straight, and the black keys rectangular, not round. I didn't win at that, haha. They're an interesting shape... Anyway, I still like them :). I used acrylic paint for this, in case you're wondering.

Tribal Diva nail art, inspired by Robin Moses!

I'm completely in love with these. I can't express just how much I adore this design and how super stoked I am that I managed to pull it off! It's not my original design though, all credit goes to Robin Moses! I'm getting a little a lot addicted to her tutorials, they're so fun to watch and it's just magic. I used acrylic paint for these too, which I'm loving - much easier to work with! Unfortunately I just have the stuff that comes in tubes at the moment but I'm mixing it with water until it's really thin and that seems to be doing the job.

They did, however, take AGES. A good three hours. I was prepared for that though, I had a nice free afternoon and felt like something really special. I saw on a comment on YouTube that these only took Robin 45 minutes - wow! I guess she's done this sort of design a lot before though, plus didn't have to water down paints every 5 minutes ☺. I'll embed her tutorial a little further down.

Two glitter gradients and sunflower nails!

All of these nails are ones I've painted on my friends in the last week. I've done a couple more designs on my nails too, but I thought that these deserved some attention! First I have one of my favourite designs on my friend Genevieve - sunflower nails! Gen's trying to stop biting her nails, so we're giving her pretty nails to distract her from her "delicious" (ewww!) nails.

My friend Katie also got her nails done, she chose different colours for each hand. They weren't combinations I would have gone for, but they actually looked amazing! Always good to get a fresh pair of eyes ☺.

Nail foils review - such an cool effect!

This is the third review I've done for Born Pretty Store recently, and I have saved the best for last! These nails are done with nail foils, which you can find here. I chose three colours, #3, #10 and #21. I love the metallic look they give your nails - I'm so stocking up on them! You can use them just for highlighting parts of the nail art too, which is awesome. Robin Moses has done that in a couple of tutorials I've watched of hers.

I haven't done a tutorial for these, but I might make one on YouTube at some point. I needed one, I failed terribly at these to begin with! You can apply them just with nail polish, but it wasn't working for me so I gave up in annoyance. I was quite disappointed until I decided to give it another shot a few days later and realised that I was pressing them on on the wrong side... so embarrassing! You're meant to apply them on the non-patterned side, in case you're wondering ☺. Just put polish on, wait until it's half dry, press on a bit of foil and then rip it off. Pressing harder worked best, I found.

Wax Pencils - great for placing studs and rhinestones!

Today I have some handy little tools from Born Pretty Store! They're wax pencils, a super cheap item which you can buy here. They're perfect for placing studs and rhinestones! Normally I use a cuticle/orange stick , dip it in clear polish to make it sticky and maneuver the rhinestones that way, but this is way better - far less messy and much easier to control ☺.

Here's a photo of the design I ended up with, keep reading to see what these clever little pencils do!

Here are the pencils themselves! They look a lot like white colouring in pencils - never a very useful colour I found, but these are wonderful! I also received these pink rhinestones (#9) to try out with the pencils.

Dotting Tools review (from Born Pretty Store)

I recently received some dotting tools to review from Born Pretty Store! I was wanting to replace my old set as a couple were missing - and to be honest, I love the colours of these ones! I think I'll donate the few remaining ones from my old set to a few of my friends who are interested in trying it out.

They play tricks on your eyes when you roll them, too. I was so excited when I realised this - sat there playing with them for a good two minutes, haha. Makes doing nail art even more fun!
As you can see, there are five dotting tools with different sized balls at the end. Some are tiny and some a quite big, which means you can get the perfect sized dot! I decided to do a bunch of dotty circles in what I see as tribal colours. I did these a bit quickly so some of the dots went astray, but I'm still happy enough with them :).

Fashion-inspired nails; I matched my nails to my top!

I love these nails! Some of my favourites ever! I got a new top from The Warehouse (stay classy New Zealand) and I thought the pattern on it was quite unique. At first glance I assumed it was leopard print but after looking a bit harder I realised it was, well - nothing! But in an awesome way! I have a picture of the fabric further down if you want to see what I mean.

I painted my nails with Tip Top Frenzee, then sponged on some Jordana white and Kleancolor Neon Lime. I just realised that I've been saying and spelling Kleancolor as "Kleoncolor" for the last year :O. I fail at life. Anyway, I then cut a bit of sponge into a really thin strip, grabbed hold of it with some tweezers and dipped it in black polish. I carefully sponged on the random pattern you can see, trying to match it to my top.

Easter toe nails, a pink gradient and rainbow cake!

A few days ago I realised I didn't have much nail art to show, so I've gone a little crazy! I've got at least three other designs photographed and ready to watermark ☺. These ones were done about a week ago, on my friend Genevieve. I did her toes as well! I've never really done nail art on toes before, but I quite liked it. Not going to bother with my own though, I'm quite tall for a girl and my feet are way too far away to bother.

As you can see, we made her toes Easter themed!
For her nails we went for a simple pink and silver gradient. I put a layer of scented Revlon polish over the top so it smelt kind of fruity :). Isn't her ring pretty?

I love my Aunt nails!

A lot of my nail art designs don't have a lot of meaning behind them, so I decided it was time for a change - here are my first appreciation nails!

My Auntie Lesley is one of the coolest people I know. She's non-judgmental, caring, honest, excitable and absolutely hilarious! She's one of a kind, and I feel feel honoured to have her as part of my family. Funny thing is, she lived in Germany for the first 21 years of my life, and I only saw her when she visited every five years or so. She used to ring us up quite a lot though, and I have fond memories of her calling me "pumpkin" and "sweets". I'm not one for pet names myself, but it suits her very well and made me feel special!

The fact of the matter is despite her being approximately 17,736 km away from me for most of my life, I've always felt like I knew her. I'd ask her for advice if I was having trouble with something or someone, and she was always brilliant. For all her crazy hilarity, she's very wise.

Last year she moved to New Zealand! With my Uncle and cousins too, of course - who are also wonderful! Now she lives three doors down from my parents, and I see her fairly regularly. I worried initially that maybe it was a case of 'absence makes the heart grow fonder,' but nope, she's just as awesome in 'real life!' I know that she misses her friends back in Germany sometimes, but I'm really happy she's here, even if it's just for my own selfish reasons :P.
