Silver dotty decals from BPS

I apologize for the bad photos in advance! I seem to be saying that a lot lately - however this will change. I've recently decided to only paint my nails (several times) in the weekend; when I can take photos of them in natural light. Plus having bare nails from Wednesday-Saturday means that I won't have anything to pick at for half the week - yay! I'm still so terrible at that, but it's gotten to the stage that I just don't care that it damages my nails. Those things grow so fast and are ridiculously tough. Anyway, nails!

Born Pretty Store has a wide range of nail decals, which basically make your nails look amazing with minimal effort. I've posted about these before (and will again, I love them) here and here. They're super cheap too, these ones were $1.86 US and there's enough to do each hand twice. I decided to go for a different colours to see which looked best.

piCture pOlish Blog Fest 2013

Celebrating the Year of the Blogger

It's piCture pOlish Blog fest! It's been a secret until now (and I hate hiding things!) so I'm glad it's finally time to let it out. We're all posting at 7pm our time, so for once being in New Zealand is a good thing! Those in America still have 17 hours or so to wait, but as us Kiwis are first to see the sun we are first with this! piCture pOlish selected a bunch of bloggers to create the most "amazing nail art manicure ever" with three of their colours. We could also use black and white polish, providing that it didn't overshadow the PP shades. The rules stated that we could also use striping tape, studs, stamps, etc so I went all out! Three bloggers will win the honour of making a new collaboration shade with Picture Polish - wouldn't that be awesome? There will be three awards - one voted by everyone, one voted by the participants of blog fest and one voted on by Jules and Megs of piCture pOlish. The voting will take place on their Pinterest page.

On social media sites, the blog fest will be tagged as #ppblogfest2013, so if you have Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, We Heart It or any other site that supports tagging you'll be able to see all the different designs by searching for that tag :).

I also made a tutorial for one of the nails. I couldn't decide on just one design so I ended up doing three different designs! Almost a skittle manicure, I guess? Here's the tutorial!

Here's a close up of both hands. I was pleasantly surprised at how they turned out!

Horse nails + plus two tutorials!

I did these horse nails back in September last year, and they've been one of my proudest nail art accomplishments. I think this is mostly because horses are an animal I'm pretty unfamiliar with, and I was relieved that I managed to make them look okay. Recently I was asked for a tutorial, but when I attempted to re-do them the result was less than than okay! The heads are all wrong - see?

I have excuses, though, poor as they may be. One; I was rushing as my birthday party was only a few hours away, and two, I was painting them upside down in order to film them. Stripes and dots are easy enough upside down, but horses are NOT!

I did two YouTube tutorials for the two different designs on these nails - the horse shoes worked out but I considered not publishing the horse ones! However, then I'd have to try again and I have sooo many things to catch up with nail-wise that I just didn't have the time, so I've sucked up my pride and put it out there.

Here's the first tutorial, for the horse shoes!

And here's the second one (eek) for the horses themselves.

Pink and black cow print nails - with a twist!

Today I have some cow-print water decals from Born Pretty Store to show you! I've been playing around a lot with their decals lately, and overall think they're awesome. I must admit though, this was the least exciting one for me; mostly because the spots are super easy to do yourself with a dotting tool. Next time I might just go for decals with heaps of words or something - they make the final look much more intricate and eye-catching! Still, they're fun to play around with and you can buy them here if you're interested.

Here's the packet they came in. As you can see there are 20 designs, so you can use this packet for each nail twice. Of course, depending on your nail length you can apply two decals per nail. However my nails are tiny little nubbins at the moment, so that wasn't an option for me! They have the words "fashion" and "concise" written on them. I found concise a rather strange word to use! "Style" may have been a better choice, haha.

Pink to purple gradient nails!

Oops. It's Thursday night and I haven't posted since Sunday! Here's the part where I complain about how hard it is to work full time and do a blog post every couple of days. I'm sure so many people must do it but I just find it so difficult at times! It's not the nail painting that takes time, it's the editing, watermarking, writing, and publishing on various different social media sites. And I'm so behind on reviews... I'll have to focus on them this weekend.
What's that thing called a social life?

Anywho, I did these over a month ago, so I'm not 100% sure of the colours. I know that the pink is OPI's Kiss Me on my Tulips and that the gems/rhinestones came from Born Pretty Store, but I have no idea what purple that is I'm afraid!

I can't help but feel some sort of automatic attraction to girly nails. I love random designs like Batman, SpongeBob and Caterpillars and as much as the next person, but there's something to be said for pink. Gender conformity at it's best!

Skittle nail art - children's version!

Ladybirds, cupcakes, bumblebees, daisies and monarch butterflies! I figured this would be a combination of nail art that children would like, and I was right. At least one child went home that weekend confusing mum when they pulled out her collection and started rambling about ladybugs... cute!

Sick of winter and finishing late, by the way. It means I can only take photos using natural light on the weekends, and when I use my light box it highlights the fact that my hands are freezing cold. Zombie hands FTW.

I wish I was rich and could jump on a plane and follow summer or spring around the globe. Well, maybe not summer... I hear it's pretty hot in the US right now.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar nail art

I did these nails on someone for their son's first birthday party! Each nail was carefully planned and I love the way they turned out. In hindsight I'd  slightly change the way I did the "very hungry caterpillar" but other than that I like them.

Who's read The Very Hungry Catepillar? It's a very popular children's book. I used to read it when I was a child and now I read it to the kids at work! Not many books stay popular for that long!
Here are a couple of close ups of both hands.

My 23rd Birthday nails - the story of my life on my fingernails!

What you're seeing here is the result one day off work sick, three hours of nail painting and 23 years of my life in tiny, tiny pictures. Yep, I'm insane. I'm just glad that my headache didn't worsen while doing this and I only had one throat-destroying coughing fit!

Anyway, so these nails are quite special to me. I asked on Facebook a while ago for ideas for my birthday nails (I'm 23 today!) and someone suggested I should have each nail represent a few years of my life. Such a good idea - challenge accepted!

Here's what I came up with:

I used about a million different nail polishes for this, and I wrote them all down for those who want to know - they're listed at the bottom of this post. I used black acrylic paint for the outlining - I bought some from Warehouse Stationery a while ago and had been dying to try it out. It was thin stuff, not the gunky stuff you get in a tube, and it was much easier to use! Normally I have to mix the thick stuff with water to make it the right consistency, but I could use this straight out of the container. It was also a little more forgiving; but there are both pros and cons to using acrylic paint. Maybe I'll do a post about it some time.

Time to explain what's on each finger!

Despicable Me nail art & tutorial!

I, like the rest of the world, loved the movie Despicable Me.
I, like the rest of the world, cannot wait to see the second movie!
So I, like the rest of the world's nail artists, painted the minions from Despicable Me on my nails.
Actually, I've done them before too, about a year ago. With the new movie out I figured it was time to do them again, and I did a tutorial for them this time as well. Best thing about this design is that they're a lot easier to do than they look! I have three different playlists for difficulty on YouTube - easy, medium and hard. These were put in medium, and are quite do-able. They do take a bit of time though. Speaking of nail art that takes a while, I think I just tied, or possibly bet my record for longest time spent painting a single design. They're my birthday nails, and each nail tells a story about me during a 1-3 year period in my life. They took over three hours! I'll be posting them tomorrow :).

Here's the tutorial!

Easy striped nail art tutorial - on YouTube

I've filmed a quick YouTube tutorial for easy nail art stripes! I've done a picture tutorial for these before but I thought I'd add one to my YouTube account as well, for those who follow me on YouTube and not my blog. They're super easy and quick - I like to do this design in colours that complement a more detailed design on a couple of feature nails. You still look like you have a complete manicure but it takes less time :).

The colours I used were:
China Glaze - White on White
LA Colors Art Deco: Wild Fuschia
Jordana Pop Art - Contemporary White
Orly - Cupcake

Here's the tutorial!

Skittle nail art - glequins, leopard print and stripes!

I did these nails on my friend ages ago, and I really like them! I must do them on myself sometime soon; I love the mix of colours and patterns. Katie chose the colours - ones I wouldn't normally choose, but it opened my eyes to trying new things in nail art as I love this. It's more "grown-up" nail art than I've been used to lately :).

As you can see, the middle, pinky and thumb all have a white and green themed leopard-print design. I split the background colour on the thumb nail to make it a bit different. The ring finger is a plain black background with lots of glequins all over it - probably my favourite nail! The index finger is some simple stripes with white, green, silver and green glitter polish.

BPS Holographic nail polish - #8 Bright Blue

Born Pretty Store has a bunch of pretty new holographic polishes to try out - their own brand! I thought they looked pretty cool, so I got a couple to review. Today I've got a blue one to show you!

I don't usually wear a lot of holographic, glittery or otherwise non-standard (creme) nail polish. This is because I almost always have nail art and I like the colours to be consistent, not one sparkly and others not.

However, I found that this nail polish is the right mix between too different and not different enough. My rather fussy self decided that it was good enough to team up with some nail art, which is what I did! Nothing too complicated, just some simple stripes but I think they look nice with this colour. I imagine leopard print or zebra stipes would look good, too!

Here's a swatch of the Born Pretty holographic polish by itself.

Lollipop nail art tutorial

I had a great response to my lollipop nails I posted a few days ago and had many tutorial requests, so I did one today :). These ones ended up slightly different than the last ones - kind of better but worse at the same time, if that makes any kind of sense.

Here it is! Still having lighting problems but the videos are slowly getting better. I can't even handle looking at my first YouTube video now, I'm so embarrassed of it! And I know I'll be the same with this one some day too, providing I keep this whole thing up in the long term.

If you haven't seen it already, please check out my YouTube and subscribe if you like it! It's here.

Spongebob Squarepants nails!

Every now again I'll have some nail art that really stands out. I'll remember them for months and months and they're loved on-line and offline. Unfortunately, most of these nail designs require 3+ hours of nail painting... but not these! Introducing...

Spongebob nails! I love how they look, they're so instantly recognisable and perfect! Best of all is that anyone can do them, provided you have a yellow nail polish and $2.86 US. Not bad eh? You can buy them from Born Pretty Store, I'll put all the links a bit further down.

Lollipop nail art!

I haven't posted in such a long time, it's terrible! I've been so busy at work... but have still been painting my nails! It's the editing and post-writing that takes so long. I have heaps of designs photographed; I'll have to organise them all in the weekend.

Anyway, here are my lollipop nails! I really like these, I'm thinking of doing a YouTube tutorial for them. I was trying to think of a design that the kids at work would like too, and my husband suggested lollipops!
I immediately thought of this kind, and googled it to see if anyone else had done them before. Not really - well not in the way I was going to. Cute + original = do it!

I had issues taking photos though as it was dark. However with a bit a lot of editing my hands looked a little less zombie-like, which I figured was a good thing.
