Tigger Nails!

Tigger was always my favourite Winnie the Pooh character. So happy and cute! And one of the biggest things that defined him were those stripes. Big, black and orange.
These nails didn't start out as being Tigger nails, I just looked at them afterwards and thought of him - even if the nail polish I used was a bit too red to properly pull it off. They're a very similar pattern to my bumblebee nails I did ages ago, but these ones are a lot tidier (even if my nails are still too short!!).

After the base coat (QVS nail hardener) I applied three coats of "Sexy" by China Glaze. This made the colour as opaque as possible - and the shimmer looked beautiful! The photo below isn't a very accurate representation...With a black striper polish (Jordana) I painted on the tips. I ended up leaving it like that overnight - it wasn't until later I decided to add to the pattern.

Then I carefully painted on the rest of the black, doing a slight curve with my striper brush.
Pretty happy with the results!

Also - my nail polish collection is growing! Granted, most of them are no-name brands, but you've got to start somewhere, right?

Cow print + Border nails

This is my second attempt at cow nails - the first ones were done on my sisters nails back in May. As you can see, these ones are a bit different, and the cows faces have more detail. I got the idea for this one from this photo, but tweaked it a bit. For a start, I painted the cow on the ring finger as well as the thumb. Originally I did the noses the same, but then realised that cows noses are NOT slits (see here!). So, with a bit of nail polish remover on a cotton bud I removed the old noses and made them more realistic.

I used my white Jordana nail polish as the background colour, the noses were done with pink MIKI polish and I painted on the details with a black Jordana striper. A dotting tool would have been better but I felt a bit lazy.

These border nails were my first attempt, and I think they turned out pretty well. Turns out I have no good photos of them though, which is why I'm shoving them in this entry... the photos don't deserve their own post :P. I used a pink MIKI nail polish, white Jordana striper brush and black Jordana striper brush.

Sunset Nails

This one is one of my latest favourites! While it may be hot in other parts of the world right now, here in NZ it is freeeezing, and painting a sunny pattern  always makes me feel better.

I was on a nail-painting break, but that didn't last long. This design looks a lot harder than it is, by the way, it just requires patience and a steady hand. I started off with a base coat, of course, then painted my nails yellow. Then with the same yellow ('LA colors') and a red ('Nutrimetics') I sponged on a gradient. I was going to leave it there, but I really didn't feel like studying, so decided to experiment a bit.

I used a black striper polish ('Jordana') to do all the details. The lines were quite straightforward (no pun intended...). The palm trees took a bit longer, but came out better than I expected. I think this was because the end of my brush isn't quite even - there are a few odd hairs sticking out. This worked well for me though, making the palm trees looking much more detailed!

I waited for it all to completely dry, then added a top coat.

Sorry about the poor picture quality, The only photos I have are from my phone. I've given up looking for my camera charger now, and have borrowed my dad's camera instead.

Hopefully tomorrow I'll add the photos of my current nails - another cow design!

I have a 'like' button!

Sorry, no nail photos today but I'll have some tomorrow!
I'm just letting you know that after a lot of playing around I managed to put a 'like' button for facebook at the end of each post. However, it's a bit special and you have to push 'confirm' then 'like' before it'll work. Try it out and you'll know what I mean. I'll try fix this at some point but I thought I'd just highlight it :).

And to make this post a whole lot cuter, here's a picture of some cute kittens in a mug I found on this site.

Hope everyone's having a lovely day!

Space Spirals and Green Gradient nail art

These are my last two designs I had saved up - unless you count the two on my sisters nails, but when they were taken her cuticles were in really bad shape. So I'm either going to re-do them on her or just do the same designs on my own nails.

Turns out not painting my nails and letting them breathe gets too boring for me. They're still quite short, but long enough to have some fun with! I STILL can't find my camera charger (I now have a $5 reward for whoever finds it haha) so a couple of my new designs only have phone photos.
I'll start putting them on here in a couple of days.

Anyway, so here is a spiral design I made up... looks a bit spacey too I think. I don't even remember how I did it, but I remember it was really thick and I kept knocking it on things, and ended up taking it off pretty quickly. Still, at least I like it now!

This was my first attempt at gradient nails with a sponge. I think they turned out pretty good! But then I went and ruined it by doing the tips (shown in the next photo), which took away some of it's awesomeness.

I have recently decided to stop using my normal nail polish remover for removing my nail polish - I'll just use it for cleaning up around the cuticles. Reason? It's 70% acetone, which isn't good for your skin when you use it as much as I do! (Seriously, I've gone through about five 270ml bottles in about three months. Shocking). The same brand has an acetone-free formula which will do the same thing with less harm to my skin and nails.

Who's seen the China Glaze Capitol Colours (Hunger Games) collection? It's beautiful!! I love the Hunger Games series, so it's even better in my eyes. I just bought this one, electrify, off ebay for cheap! I cannot wait until it comes, I've had my eye on this colour for ages now.

Also, yay, 16 followers now! I'm always happy when I see another one :)
Hope you like my little nail blog.

ONE MORE THING: Is anyone interested in any tutorials for any of my designs? Let me know if you are.

Geometric nails - I think!

I made these ones up when I was bored a while ago... and have no idea what to call them. Time to research different names I think. I like how the nails aren't all the same - it makes painting them a lot less monotonous too.

I've painted a few more designs on my (short) nails but they look alright... once my camera charger turns up I can upload them!

Experimenting with nail stamping!

I love nail stamping. It's such a quick and easy way to make your nails look fantastic - plus as the stamp layer is really thin it doesn't take long to dry! I can't help feel like I'm cheating a bit - but if I'm not in the mood for a long nail-painting session then they're great.
These aren't the tidiest examples, especially the first one. As you can see, I cropped this picture as my index finger was a mess!

It's an awesome pattern though. It's from stamping plate BM-319 - see it here.

This next one is from plate number BM-323 - see here. This one is probably my favourite plate I have so far - I love all the patterns! The photo isn't great - it was a light pattern but more visible than the camera portrays.

The biggest thing I've learnt from nail stamping so far is to let the colour underneath completely dry before you stamp, as you have to push quite hard.

Think I'm going to HAVE to paint my nails again now, even if they are all ugly and short!

Cute animal nails

This one took ages and required a lot of mixing of colours to get the right ones, but I think it's so cute! I did them before I got my dotters - I think if I did them again they'd look better now, but I'm still pretty happy with the way they turned out.

They obviously took quite a while :P.
Hope you like them!

UPDATE 24/11/2012: I found who originally did these! I had only seen them on we heart it, which is where I got the idea from. Then I was going through my blog roll and was looking at Adventures in Acetone latest post, and saw this in her sidebar! My mind is honestly blown. So cool though! She did them a million times better than me, you can check them out HERE.

Animal print nails

Yesterday I cut my nails really short! I feel a bit empty now, to be honest. I've had them relatively long for the last couple of months and now they'll take ages to grow back. I've decided to give them a well-deserved break - maybe two or three weeks.
I can't wait for the yellow parts to grow out - right now, my nails really show the importance of a base coat! I didn't use one for the first month or so of doing this, and the colour pigments really destroyed the natual colouring! There's a quite distinct part where my nails change from normal colour to yellow, it's quite intriguing. If anyone wants to see my icky stained nails I'm happy to put up a picture.

I have about 10 different nail art designs stored up in preparation for my nail polish boycott. I'll put them on here every couple of days until they grow back. Here's the first one!

I did this about a week and a half ago. I quite like how it's the same theme but with variations - might play around more sometime. I just used basic cheap CR and Jordana nail polishes. I'm starting to go a bit off CR, to be honest. They seem to get thick really quickly.

Also, it was my birthday today and I got some more nail polishes! Including an amazing magnetic one and a stunning sparkly black one. I'll do some swatches of them at some point.

Disco ball nails and puzzle pieces

Well, I've seen similar patterns called disco nails anyway. And if I named them they'd be "stripey-bright-and-colourful-nails," definitely not cool. These took ages!! I used a striping brush to do the lines and just another more normal brush to fill them in with colour. I'd like to try them again with metallics - would be much more disco-ish, but that may have to wait for awhile as university is starting again tomorrow :(.

In my last post I said that I couldn't get my stamping plates to work - awkward, I just didn't know they had a seal on them :o. Soooo they're working now!
Here's one of my favourite patterns so far:

Dice nails

These would be great for a games night! I didn't feel like doing anything too complicated this time. Still, it was hard to make the dots go in the right place, even with my dotting tools! A common mistake I've seen made with dark-on-light polish is putting the top coat on too quickly. It makes the black, in this case, run and ruins the whole look.

Also - all my new nail stamping stuff finally arrived but it didn't work! I think I must need the special konad polish or something, either way it was very disappointing!

Monarch butterfly nails

Butterflies are so beautiful!
I've seen these around the internet for months now, but have avoided doing them as I think they are better suited for longer nails. But I decided to give them a try today anyway, as I recently got two new oranges that I thought would look nice as a gradient in the background.
Here's what I came up with!

I've also seen them done in pink, purple and my personal favourite, turquoise! But since these are my first attempt I decided to keep it natural.

The colours I used were:
Jordana - Orangesicle (943)
Jordana - Sweet Orange (972)
MIKI - Can't find a name so uhh... black.
Jordana - White (090)

I used a dotting tool for the white dots and a couple of different brushes for the black stripes.
I really like both these brands, and they're super cheap! Even the older ones I have haven't gotten all clumpy or anything :)

I have a new nail art hero - Nail Nerd. She is actually amazing - check out these Winnie the Pooh nails, they're incredible, and hand-painted!

Glam everyday nails

I just spent at least three hours redesigning my blog, and now it looks like a my little pony attacked it.
Note the new tabs!! I am very excited and proud that I managed to figure this out. I would definitely not have been able to do it without my friend Anjali, so if you want help with your blog click on her name!

These are some quick nails I did last night, using my friend's beautiful OPI nail polish. Sorry, I have no idea what the colours they were, I'm just going to call them peachy, browny and shiney.

Turned our pretty nice though, eh? Something you could wear everyday.

I now have about eight back up designs to put on here for when I go on a nail art boycott in a week or so. I figured my nails need a couple of weeks to breathe, then I'll get right back to it.

Oh! And I found a whole bunch of cheap nail stamping stuff on trademe, so expect some of that soon. I'll probably give a tutorial showing how to do it too.

One more thing - I don't mean to be a snob but from now on I'm only going to be replying to comments that either ask questions or are longer. I read them all still and love knowing that people like my little hobby!

Apple nails

These are so cute! I was asked to do these ones - and again, I had seen them around before (mostly because I have no life and spend all my free time looking up nail polish designs). I wasn't sure how they'd turn out but I love them! One of my new favourites!

They weren't very hard to do either; the most important part was to paint the outline of the apple first with a thin brush - this makes it look a whole lot tidier.

Hope you like them!

Marble nails take three and crackle

I think I'm slowly getting the hang of water marbling. New nail polish is a must! And the water can't be too cold. Anyway, this is my latest attempt, and probably the last time I'll try them for awhile.

I first got into the nail art scene because my friend had some crackle nail polish that I thought was amazing. I went nuts trying heaps of different colours for awhile then it suddenly got boring, kind of like when you love a song for a few weeks then can't stand it. However, I decided to give it another try, and this is what I came up with! I do like the colours in the background.

Summery polka dot nails + Cute purple bear!

It has been so cold lately. Horrible. My hair straightener doesn't work in the mornings because it's freaking out at the disgustingly low temperatures. I can always see my breath inside... and it is nowhere near as awesome as I thought it was when I was little, when I felt like a dragon. And it takes a good week to dry clothes and even then they smell kind of weird after spending all that time damp.
Brr brr brr.

So to distract me from the horrible weather I went with bright, colourful nail polish! I'm still having fun with my dotting tool, but found out today how amazingly quick and great-looking those konad stamps are. Maybe  one day I'll give them a try after all.

Also, here's another pretty little design I did a couple of days ago. The original was on weheartit, but I changed the colours from blue to purple :)

The Hunger Games nails - Mockingjay

I've been meaning to try this one for awhile, but was waiting for my dotters to arrive. And they have!
This was pretty hard. I used acrylic paint for a lot of it, mostly because I don't have a grey or the right colour yellow. And when you mix nail polish together on something it dries sooo fast!
Here's the tutorial video from youtube. Her mockingjay is so much better, but I'm still pretty happy with mine!
